On to the farm….

I decided to volunteer at Tiger Hill before I left home. I was told that 6 weeks in Tas was too long to cycle about, and it is all good, but my time here is not long enough! it is very interesting to learn more about permaculture and Paul seems to have most of the literature on it. Bill Wollison, the fellow who coined the term permaculture ( from permanent culture and permanent agriculture), is from Tasmania. The course we are catering for is Earthworks and they are surveying the property and getting ready to build a proper dam to help with water catchment and flow.

My first night at Tiger Hill just happened to be pizza night! Paul on the right, and Francesca, his mainstay volunteer for the last 3 months, who takes care of the sourdough, kefia and kombucha, plus has an excellent attitude and kind demeanour.

The other bartender in the Bucklnad Pub, Steve, cry kindly let me have a shower and use the kitchen, then drove me around the countyside. This is a sandstone house let go to ruin. Steve got a lot of blackberries!

Nice free campsite behind the pub, dinner without G&G!

Another country sandstone ruin. So dismaying, as I know all the stones were cut by hand.

Dirt track to Buckland, goodbye to G&G

On the dirt track from Dunalley to Buckland, wet and muddy and fun! The downhill to Buckland was stellar, but we did get chilled…

Georgi in front of me, not totally impressed with the muddy downhills.

Bartender, Con, on the right, and Chris and Karen who gallantly offered us 3 dripping wet cyclists their ‘games room’, complete with wood heater, so much appreciated!

Andrew, a cyclist from the UK, residing in Amsterdam, who we met in Port Arthur….he said we would never meet again, ha! I will see him in Amsterdam, it is not over yet my friend!

Georgi and I thought that the gulls were rather graceful….

Georgi, Greg and I said goodbye a couple of times, but this was really it! Greg proposed to her the next day, on ya’ mate!! They were a treat to travel with, and I hope I have the pleasure of their company again!

beach near Garden Point, where the convicts that were incarcerated in Port Arthur were allowed to have gardens....I am finding the whole 'convict trail' thing really creepy, especially at Brickendon near Longford where the land is still owned by the Archer family, who made their millions on the backs Of convicts transported from the UK, you have heard the stories, people being sent to Oz for 7 years for stealing a loaf of bread, fucking outrageous and nothing to be proud of. If I was a trillion airs, I would take out a full page ad in the Stdney paper saying FU Archer family! I guess the is why I am not a trillion aide, oh, am I ranting??

So, I walked into this cute little shop called Rustic, looking for a long sleeved white shirt as the sun was becoming too much. Mel did not have one in stock and in 15 minutes had invited me to her and Rob's Place to stay over night. The kindness and of the local people. generosity is overwhelming! I cooked them a passable meal with herbs and lemon from the garden, and the next day got a little with Rob and Mel's daughter, Sophie, to Hobart. I had heard there were no shoulders on the road to Hobart (there were shoulders but they were not the same material as the road). They were going to the w Wooden Boat Festival, which I took in with them, and then I got dropped off at Mel's ex-husband's house to stay the night.

the lovely Newells and their tiny farm

image image pineapple plantimage imagereally fluffy chickenimage Jeanette’s rosesimagepet guinea fowl, which eat snakes and rodents. Jeanette and Alan have 2 kinds of sheep, guinea fowl, 1 horse, 2 kinds of chickens, geese, and a sweet pup named Maggie May. They are conveniently located right after a sign advertising a ‘caravan park’, but they are not a caravan park! it seems the sign will be there forever even though the caravan park it is advertising does not exist anymore. Luckily for me they let me stay and sent me off the next morning with fresh eggs, a patty pan squash, tiny fresh cucumber and good wishes. Thank you to the lovely Westbury Newells!
